Modern Medievals – A Demonstration of Illuminated Letters

Christi Payne:
I’ve practiced calligraphy for 25 years and somewhere along the way became
enamored with medieval illuminations – those ornate versals found in ancient
manuscripts and bibles. I have studied them, copied them, collected and created
them, sometimes with traditional methods of gold leaf and vellum, but also on a
daily basis with the materials at hand.
Sunday’s demo is intended to introduce anyone who is interested to the beauty of
a hand-drawn and decorated letter. I’ll set up shop at RiverSea Gallery and quickly
make any initial you request, for young and old alike, a keepsake gladly given in
the spirit of the letter.
I’ve participated at the San Francisco Antiquarian Book Festival creating letters
to give away, and will be demonstrating the art of modern medieval illumination
in the summer of 2009 at the San Francisco Public Library’s tri-ennial calligraphy
exhibition, Kalligraphia.
