Noel Thomas: Around Town in My Tin Lizzie

With the change of season comes a new collection of watercolors from local favorite, Noel Thomas. Thomas is sure to deliver with his easily recognized loose style and iconic Astoria views, but this time he turns up the quirk factor and includes some unlikely guests to the party. RiverSea Gallery will be sharing the paintings of Noel Thomas in an exhibition titled Around Town in My Tin Lizzie, October 1st – November 1st. All are invited to attend First Night, October 1st from 6 – 8pm for a preview party and informal artist talk given by Thomas. This is a casual event open to all who are interested in learning more about the artist, while also gaining unique insight from the artist’s perspective about the work as well as his techniques. As always, RiverSea Gallery will be participating in Second Saturday Artwalk, 5 – 8 pm, October 8th, while hosting an artist’s reception for Noel Thomas during that time. The artwork will remain on display through November 1st.

On the heels of a wildly successful fundraiser benefiting the Astoria High School art department, Thomas has created another inspired collection of watercolor paintings that exemplify his renowned skills. “This group of paintings reflects my continuing love affair with Astoria, along with some excursions into quirkier subject matter. It also represents the range of my work over the past seven months—winter through summer.” Thomas explores a wide range of subject matter within this series. Known for his sense of quirk, he will surprise and delight with a close look at the randomness of everyday objects, while sharing with the viewer his wry and genuine sense of humor. “While I never tire of the ships and river scenes, this year I’ve had more time in the studio, and around town with “the drawing group,” to explore varying subject matter and media—watercolor, oil pastel, and charcoal. As always, I paint what catches my eye, whether I’m driving down the hill to my studio, having coffee at Pier 39, or just looking around the house. I feel especially fortunate to have my health and the time to ‘just paint,’ treating each day as another opportunity to get something down on paper.”

Thomas, who is humble about his accomplishments, was born and raised in Longview, WA. After a brief stint in the military, he studied watercolor and graduated with distinction from Los Angeles Art Center College. He went on to pursue a 15-year career as an art director to advertising firms in New York and Los Angeles, returning to the Northwest in 1974. Since 1990, Noel Thomas has been painting watercolors out of his Astoria, OR studio. Over the years, his paintings have garnered wide recognition by both collectors and art professionals. He is a signature member of the prestigious American Watercolor Society, as well as the Northwest Watercolor Society. He has also been the recipient of the NW Watercolor Society Open Exhibition: Winsor & Newton Painting Award, and has received the NWWS Open Exhibition, First Place Award for the painting "Chris' News" along with many other awards of distinction.
