Featured Spirit of the River Photographer to Exhibit at RiverSea Gallery

Sunday, October 4th, RiverSea Gallery will present the photography of Judy Vander Maten. As part of the gallery’s Artists on Sundays series, Vander Maten will be on hand from 2:00 to 4:00 pm to discuss her current series of color photographs depicting the Lower Columbia River region. Vander Maten’s work will also be featured during the Spirit of The River’s annual fundraising event.

For those people who enjoy Vander Maten’s imagery exhibited during the Spirit of The River’s stage performances, the gallery event will provide an opportunity to speak with the artist directly, and to view more of her work. Her imagery and vision of the area is a profound statement and documentation of the natural beauty that is many times taken for granted.

Judy Vander Maten of Cathlamet, Washington has lived along the banks of the Columbia River since 1987. During this time she has explored the lower Columbia region on foot, by car and kayak with camera in hand. She has an uncanny ability to focus on the many moods of the river and successfully captures these elements within her photography. Vander Maten states, I have been photographically documenting the tidal reaches of the Columbia River off and on for about fifteen years now. As I travel along its path almost daily, I find that in daylight and darkness, through changing weather and shifting tides, I am continuously being treated with a never-ending barrage of new visions and experiences. It is a journey I find very enjoyable, and I enjoy sharing it with others through photographs.

Vander Maten has had a successful career as a photographer and instructor. She has been represented by RiverSea Gallery for nearly a decade while also exhibiting her work across the country. She currently teaches photography at Lower Columbia Community College in Longview, Washington.

RiverSea Gallery, in addition to regular, monthly art exhibitions presents Artists on Sundays; a series of mini-exhibits. The focus of Artists on Sundays is to offer expanded opportunities for members of the public to interact with artists, introduce new artists, and showcase artistic technique and style. The artist receptions are held on various Sundays from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and often include a demonstration and/or talk by the artist, along with the opportunity for meaningful interaction with the person behind the artwork. Please check with the gallery for upcoming Artists on Sundays events.
