Roger McKay: Inner Landscape
Throughout history artists have taken great inspiration from the literal beauty of their surroundings. Astoria’s own, Roger McKay, who is known for his carefully crafted landscape paintings, will exhibit a new series at RiverSea Gallery titled, Inner Landscape. Followers of the artist are sure to notice that this time McKay’s work presents a new twist, and some definite departures from his usual style. The exhibit opens August 27 and runs through September 13. There will be an opening reception held Saturday, August 27, 6 – 8pm, to celebrate this new collection of paintings. All are invited to attend and to hear first hand from McKay about this series and its source of inspiration.
Within these new paintings, McKay depicts favorite local scenes, such as the beloved Megler Bridge, Tongue Point, and a freighter making its way up river. This time however the artist has reached deep into his imagination to produce work that stretches beyond the purely representational. There’s an added element of story, a play with humor, mystery, fantasy and lore.
About this series, McKay states: “These paintings are very special to me .They celebrate my love affair with Astoria, while merging this landscape with my own inner imaginings. Every piece was created with thoughtful care and detail. I invite viewers to share in my inner landscapes.”
After several years spent working with watercolor, McKay has returned to oil as his painting medium. This series of work is the first by the artist in quite some time utilizing his exemplary skill with oil as medium. His painterly skills, noted control of hand and unique color palette translate well into whatever medium he chooses. McKay never fails to impress his audience, and these new paintings do just that.
