Katrina Sentgeorge "Striped Shadows on Steps"
Mother and Daughter Exhibit Art from Shared Adventures in Japan
Rebecca Reed Sentgeorge, a former Astoria Middle School art teacher and well known north coast artist, has spent more time in
Asia the last few years than on US soil. This week she's home from a year spent teaching in Japan and has worked with her
daughter, Katrina on an art exhibition titled, Japan: A Collaborative View, to be held at the gallery from August 2nd
through August 18th. All are invited to meet the artists at the opening reception on Sunday, August 2nd, from 2:00 to
4:00 pm, a part of the ongoing Artists on Sundays series at the gallery.
The show consists of watercolor paintings by Rebecca Sentgeorge paired with black and white photographs by her daughter depicting
the same subjects. The collaborative exhibit is a result of the time they spent exploring around Tokyo and surrounding areas
of Japan, and is inspired by their experiences there. Rounding out the display are annotations giving the background story
for each image.
"Katrina and I took trips around looking for things that caught our eye that would make good black and white photographs for
her and good watercolor subjects for me," says Sentgeorge. "Normally, like most artists, I work alone, but for this series we
chose the subjects together. We constantly discussed the way the shadows were hitting or not hitting the subject and the
effect we were looking for in our work."
Originally a ceramic artist and printmaker, Sentgeorge has exhibited drawings, paintings and prints in this region for many
years. She has participated in solo and group shows at RiverSea Gallery since 1999, and in 2004 had several pieces accepted
into the Journey's End National Art Exhibit.
Sentgeorge first journeyed to Japan in 2005 on a three-week study tour after being chosen for a Fulbright Memorial Fund
teacher exchange. That trip renewed her interest in international travel and became a turning point in her creative evolution
and in her life. In 2007 she and her husband left Astoria for a life abroad in a different culture. She spent a year teaching
art at an international school in Suzhou, China, and has spent the past year working in Japan. Each foray abroad has inspired
a new series of watercolors.
Katrina Sentgeorge, a 21 year old art major, spent several months in Japan with her parents. She had a proposal to do a
series of photographs for an independent studies credit while in Japan, thus leading to the mother/daughter collaboration.
She has been interested in darkroom photography for a number of years, and took classes from Chuck Meyer at Clatsop Community
College while attending Astoria High School.
