Net Connexions
Netting metaphors thread loosely through a series of abstract oil paintings by Astoria native, Linden, presented in a solo
exhibition at RiverSea Gallery July 11th – August 4th. Also featured this month in a separate small exhibiton, is a new
series of etchings by Gearhart artist, Rhonda Grudenic. The opening reception takes place Saturday, July 11th, 5 –8 pm.,
and will include ambient sound by musician Jon Cates of Portland, Oregon. All are invited to enjoy an evening out and to
celebrate our diverse artistic community.
Throughout this group of paintings, Linden considers the relationship between shape and symbol as the basis of her imagery.
Carefully considering color and composition, she has put together a strong and cohesive statement of interlocking and woven
metaphor. Drawing from her own internal symbols, she explores connection to life forms, and illustrates through abstraction
possible stories of evolution and beyond. “Nature’s shapes and colors fuel my creative process; in an inventory of private
symbols, biomorphic and geometric shapes, in air and water forms connected by the common thread of netting.”
Within this series, Linden follows a distinct journey. Beginning to end, there is a progression for the artist, who
conveys a sense of mythology and storytelling in her work. Through metaphor she also explores her connection to place
and space. Linden’s studio, located in one of the last remaining net sheds on the lower Columbia, might also serve as
influence to her imagery. One can’t help but draw parallels between the past and future within Linden’s work.
Linden began her formal study and training here at Clatsop Community College where she credits Royal Nebeker, Roy
Garrison and Nancy Kem as influences and mentors. She later earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from Pacific
Northwest College of Art. She has consistently exhibited her work throughout Oregon, California and Chicago since
receiving her degree.
