Oil Paintings from Marion Raney Oman

Exhibiting at RiverSea Gallery March 14th – April 7th will be a new series of oil paintings presented by Marion Raney Oman, a Long Beach peninsula artist. Oman’s work has been a longtime favorite; her landscapes and still life paintings frequently depict her faraway travels as well as interests that are inspired closer to home. Enjoy an evening with the artist at the opening reception Saturday, March 14th, 5 – 8pm.

Oman who is known for her dream like landscapes brings to RiverSea Gallery a collection of paintings that have evolved over time, becoming a body of work that wasn’t necessarily what the artist set out to explore of convey. Through time and contemplation, Oman has created a new series that acts as a departure to what has been. For many artists, life changes, big or small enter into the finished work, the psyche spills into the physical act of creating; changing composition, use of medium and color palette amongst other elements that take a painting to completion. Through this process all aspects of an artist’s style can grow and develop. This is the case for Oman.

Oman considers the practice of painting as a means to discovery. She states, “Its about the journey, not the destination.” In so doing, her work becomes more about the process of growth through painting instead of complete focus on the finished piece. “This show is the new direction. It reminded me that you can’t always impose your own will; things will come out in their own way. Sometime just going with it intuitively lets you focus on the exploration instead of the goal.”

Within this series, Oman presents careful depictions of nature. She brings landscapes that portray our own known surroundings as well as imagery taken from Australia and Hawaii, a couple of her favorite destinations of travel. Along with her paintings, Oman also includes functional art; fashioned from her paintings on canvas she has crafted folding room screens. When discussing this series of work Oman states, “by it’s very nature a detour on your proposed route is a bit out of the ordinary and doesn’t always dovetail with the whole of the itinerary. This group of paintings and screens reflects the unevenness of side trips. Savor the ride.”

"It's about the journey, not the destination"

At the beginning of this series I had a guiding idea. After finishing several paintings, the entire series took a different turn from the original intent. Those first pieces got left by the side of the road and the real series began to unfold.

This show is the new direction. It reminded me that you can’t always impose your own will; things will come out in their own way. Sometimes just going with it intuitively lets you focus on the exploration instead of the goal.

By it’s very nature a detour on your proposed route is a bit out of the ordinary and doesn’t always dovetail with the whole of the itinerary. This group paintings and screens reflects the unevenness of side trips. Savor the ride.

Sincerely,
Marion Raney Oman
