Richard Hoffman
My dedication to art began when I moved to Astoria in the early 1990’s and began taking classes from Royal Nebeker, Roy Garrison, Richard Rowland, and Kristin Shauck at Clatsop Community College. I experimented with both 2 dimension and 3dimension presentations. More recently, I had the opportunity to take workshops and classes in Portland and at the Multnomah Art Center. I divide my time between painting mostly in oil, sometimes acrylic, and occasionally a creation in clay. Currently, I am experimenting with new glazing techniques designed to blend my love of color with my passion for the perfect shape. My paintings have been on display at the RiverSea Art Gallery in Astoria, Trails End in Gearhart, and various other locales throughout Clatsop County and I have work in private collections on the West Coast and in New England.
My current work is about everyday things, street scenes, people at work, at play, or just the ordinary. I love to walk or drive through a city and watch how people live. In my paintings, I try to capture a moment in time, as if I were looking out of my window while sipping a cup of coffee. I try to make the finished work interesting, perhaps more so than what I glimpsed. My work has been growing in size, too. The larger size captures the panorama of a cityscape and invites the viewer into the scene.
When I’m not doing this, I paint still life, figurative art, or portraits. All of which helps keep me connected to traditional artistic expression, walking in the steps of the old Masters so to speak.
