Noel Thomas
Since 1990, Noel Thomas has been painting watercolors out of his Astoria, OR studio. Born in Longview, WA,
Thomas studied watercolor and graduated with distinction from Los Angeles Art Center College. He went on to
pursue a 15-year career in advertising art in New York and Los Angeles. Returning to the Northwest in 1974,
Thomas and his wife began a business of creating aged miniature houses for collectors and museums. He is a
signature member of the American Watercolor Society, and the Northwest Watercolor Society. Thomas's work
can be seen in Astoria at the Riversea Gallery.
There's a spirit in this town that's been here all along that doesn't change, even though the town is changing.
People have chosen to live here because they like the place. Astoria has always had a lot of energy, maybe
even more now than ever.
What I see out my studio window is intersections-streets channeling traffic around the old and the new-demolition,
restoration, development. Astoria is at a crossroads, on and along the river, as well as in town and the
neighborhoods. Our identity is changing, as it must, but who and what are we going to be? Do we know where we
are going?
These questions, along with the ever-changing river, light and seasons, infuse this collection of paintings.
