Marcy Baker

Born and raised in the Finger Lakes Region of central New York State, Marcy Baker graduated with a B.F.A. in textile design from Syracuse University in 1982. The following year she moved west, spending time in Northern California before setting in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1991. There Baker was introduced to the monotype process, the perfect medium to express her affinity for color and pattern. The uncluttered New Mexican landscape also inspired her mixed media constructions. For ten years Baker exhibited her prints and collages in numerous venues in New Mexico, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts group exhibition at LewAllen Contemporary and two solo shows at Running Ridge Gallery.

In 2001 Baker and her husband relocated to Portland, Oregon; they were drawn to the verdant landscape and urban lifestyle. Shortly after the move Baker began painting in acrylics, building delicate layers of paint alternated with collage elements made of drawings, relief prints and etchings. When asked about inspiration, she says "I am captivated by the delicate balance of urban and botanical forms and by the contrast of lush green foliage against a muted gray sky. With each new body of work, I set out to interpret and express these abundant surroundings." Baker’s work is in the collections of Kansas Wesleyan University, Hallmark Collection, and Graphic Chemical & Ink Company, and has been published in Oregon Home magazine. Currently she teaches two printmaking classes at Multnomah Arts Center - a part of Portland Parks and Recreation - and since 2003 has been an artist member of Print Arts Northwest, an educational nonprofit that operates for artists, educators and collectors in the community. Baker’s paintings and monotypes are represented by Mary Lou Zeek Gallery in Salem, RiverSea Gallery in Astoria and Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery.
