Lori Presthus
My artistic intention is to create art which stirs the soul and awakens our connection with the natural world. I have selected birds as my subject because to me they represent a true sense of perseverance and freedom. Each bird’s individual beauty captivates and offers endless inspiration.
The painting begins with a light pencil sketch defining the basic composition and areas of contrast. The background is completed first with multiple layers of egg tempera. Each layer is applied thinly and allowed to dry thoroughly before applying the next layer. This creates a luminosity and depth akin to the effect of layered glass. If you look closely at the painting you will see the many layers of color. When the background is complete the subject begins to form and is finished with detail in pastels and colored pencils. In general the backgrounds are painted in a very free expressive style and the subjects with more attention to fine details.
