Jennifer Williams
Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, the power of nature has always influenced my work. I strive to show the
strength and perseverance of nature, while questioning the imbalance caused by our own presence. My interest lies
in those contrasts that occur when nature is viewed as society’s resource. Living in the Northwest, these themes
surround us. Whether it is the unnatural patterns created by managed forests, or the strategic re-routing of a
stream, these scenes have become a part of our landscape.
My medium is paper collage and acrylic on wood. Thick layering of recycled fragmented paper and translucent
paint provides a lush base. Meticulous scratching and sanding creates a raw surface that becomes an integral
part of the painting as bits and pieces of the text, maps, and images are revealed. I work each composition
stimulated by fragmented abstraction with little pre-conception. As a result, each piece is a new discovery.
I paint anticipating that moment when the painting takes on a life of its own.
