Dick Libby
After working as a bureaucrat and carpenter/remodeler, in 1982 I entered the realm of self-employed artist. The die was cast---I would rediscover my interest in art (which began with college, and was stimulated by studying art in Europe, from Sweden to Spain). I would sink or swim based upon my success at inventing appealing forms.
And what an adventure it has been--nearly three decades of making mixed-media assemblage and weathervanes featuring salvaged materials and found objects.
These artworks involve various mysteries--what were the materials designed for, how die they acquire an appealing character? Much of my wood and metal is salvaged from houses being renovated. Putting them together is like designing a puzzle. It is a challenge and a delight.
As I gradually approach retirement, the adventure of crafting assemblages continues to enchant me--like an incantation from the world of Gauguin or Diebenkorn--voices and forms emerge in my consciousness, just as surely as the unheeded wind.
In devoting my life to making artworks, I experience creative energies which amaze me, as if riding a mighty river to new horizons. It demonstrates life's adventure and abundance.
