Carolyn Holman

I grew up always loving the world of ideas and transformation. It is magical to literally create worlds to visit and wonder about. After studying a more commercial application of art in school, I find myself returning towards a more fluid self expressed style. Mediums are interchangeable as long as layering color and texture are in the mix. These last few years, encaustic painting feels right. It creates a wonderful depth of all the above.

As individual space is valued, the landscapes could represent the world of opportunity that exists in all of us. Or I could share that I choose to paint because it is just cool to see something created out of nowhere. Flowers express the immediacy and tender moments of the present that we all hold. They are windows to see through, precious and unique.

Bringing my focus back to the dance of creating, I discover an energizing exchange that is alive and unpredictable. Creativity gives me a place to explore and surprise myself. I feel the time is now to come into one’s own individuality and create a feeling of expanse and unspoiled perspectives. No matter what our medium, profession or means of expression, it is timely and relevant with no need to hesitate to give ourselves and our hearts permission to do so.

About the Encaustic Process

These paintings are created with an ancient technique using layers of beeswax, resin crystals and pigments. This process is known as encaustic, meaning " to burn into." The heated beeswax and resin mix is brushed on a wood substrate. As it cools, oil paint is applied for the first layer of the painting. The clear beeswax mix is brushed on top. The surface is then heated using a blowtorch, bonding the layers together. This process is repeated several times; the clear areas of wax allow colors to show through, resulting in a soft depth with a translucent quality. As a finishing step, the surface of the painting is buffed to a gentle glow.
